Key points:
I am an E38 fan myself, currently owning a clean Biarritz-Blau 735i that my dad daily drives. I always found this generation of the 7 series as the result of the best ideas that BMW gathered for so many years of car manufacturing (and then sadly started to forget about, but that's another story).
But making such a nice, cool, comfortable and reliable car means one thing: people will drive them a lot. Most E38s you will find are either in next to salvage condition or have left the 300.000km mark a long time ago. That's not the case for this one.
This particular unit of 740i E38 was first sold in Japan. Do not check pics again just yet, it's a left hand drive car. High spec cars could be ordered this way and the story that went from one owner to the next says that this car belonged to the spanish embassy in Japan, although there is no proof (sadly). Being a '94 car, his life down there was pretty short as it was imported to Spain in 1999. The result: A left hand drive car with all japanesse documents and stickers and a 100% rust-free body thanks to the warm spanish weather.
Today's very good condition is a proof of how easy was life for this one. I would like you to refer to the pics (I can send you around 200 more if you ask me) to asses condition, but I want to point out some things.
EXTERIOR:
The car had a full respray around 5 years ago by the previous owner. In Spain we don't have a detailing culture and cars are just resprayed when you want them to look like new again. Paint thickness measurements showed no proof of accidents or repairs. We just don't polish cars because a full respray its not that expensive. Therefore paint condition is close to perfect.
Rims are genuine RONDELL said to be bought new in a BMW dealership.
Sunroof works smoothly.
INTERIOR:
Build quality always stands out in E38s and this one is no exception. Leather condition is great and everything seems to work as it should.
The left hand glove box is loose and should be checked.
As expected the screen has some dead pixels/lines.
MECHANICAL:
Engine shows a healthy compression test with 14,5-15bar across all cylinders. Our smoke test was also good as no leaks were found in the intake system (common problem with the M6Xs. The cooling system showed no leaks even with 2 bars of pressure. The engine idles smoothly, pulls strond and sounds amazing. Did I even say that I love V8s?
The gearbox runs flawlessly in both automatic and semi-automatic modes. Shifts are smooth and predictable.
The EDC (Electronic Damper Control, if you are asking yourself) was smartly removed and shocks were replaced with regular units.
Some suspension ball-joints would need replacement due to worn boots:
- Front main suspensión arms
- Rear sway bar links
- Rear suspension arms (the little ones which always break in E38/E39s)
Rear mufflers were replaced for "sportier" units.
Last Official Inspection (TÜV) showed no defects.
The driving experience is as enjoyable as you are expecting, but probably more than you can imagine. Everything in this car only makes you wish for a longer trip. This car is the result of pairing one of the best chassis and engines ever made by BMW. Change my mind.
